Renaissance Art Database (RenArtDB) is a visual learning resource
for the stydy of Renaissance art.
Whether you are a student,
an art lover or a professional, you may visually access
over 130 Renaissance paintings and sculptors through an
interactive Map displaying both current and original locations.
If you wish to edit, implement or fully reuse any information,
you are welcome to contact us, download our data set
and share your up-to-date version.
RenArtDB came together as a collaborative project within the context of the module 'Renaissance Art and
Architecture',
University of Buckingham (Spring Term 2016).
Under the supervision of Carlo Corsato, a team of
12 undergraduate students from both Art History and Psychology filled information on the data set,
shared a spreadsheet on
Google Drive and used a Facebook group to discuss and fix any issues they came across.
The Map provides a visual gateway to the data set of RenArtDB.
To search information directly on the Map, click on one of the dots and an interactive information box will open. Sources of information and good resolution images can be accessed clicking on Location and Title links respectively. (If using a mobile or tablet, click on to view the legend.)
Images are not imported in RenArtDB and should be used and credited as indicated by the rights owners in their respective terms and conditions and/or licences.
The Map has been created with Carto and can be shared, embedded and reused by clicking on the Share Botton
We may assist you generating your own maps to visualise and access different version of RenArtDB or different data sets for your own projects. Contact us.
The data set of RenArtDB makes information on Renaissance art easily accessible and reusable. Consisting of a selection of over 130 paintings and sculptures located in both Europe and North America, the dataset allows you to view, edit, implement, and fully reuse key descriptive meta data of each artwork, including both original and current locations.
The data set does not require any registrations or software installations to be used or accessed. It comes as a .csv file and can be opened/edited with Libreoffice Calc, Google Sheets, Ms Excel or Numbers for Mac.
Good res images can be also tracked down through both the data set (Column Image) and the Map (instructions in the Map section).
Students collected and implemented the information forming the dataset. When reusing the dataset or part of it, credit should be given to each contributor as indicated in the entries of the spreadsheet (Column Data Entry) or the infoboxes on the map (Credit link).
We are grateful to both institutions and Wikipedia contributors for sharing online the information we have aggregated. Links to galleries and Wikipedia have been provided in the data set (Column Data Source). (We hope none is missing.)
We may provide training on how to: - prepare a data set containing descriptive meta data on works of art according to curatorial standards;
- study, share and reuse information online;
- visualise and distribute a database through a multilayer map.
